Finding Exercise That Works For You

There’s a saying that you can’t outrun your fork. No matter how much you work out, if you eat poorly, you likely won’t get the results you want. As we talked about earlier this week, tracking calories, eating better, and getting daily steps are the foundation.

But when it comes to working out, I’m learning something important – do what you enjoy. I know I should lift weights. I know it’s important. But honestly, I’ve just been treating it like a chore, which makes it tough to get started.

Last week I took a big step and signed up at an MMA gym near my side of town. Had my first Muay Thai class – I was extremely sore the next day. Maybe it doesn’t have all the benefits of lifting weights, but here’s what matters: I enjoy it, and I can see myself doing it regularly. The best workout is the one you’ll actually stick with consistently.

Weight loss is personal, and here’s something I struggle with: if I can’t be perfect, if I can’t do everything I know I should be doing, I tend to do nothing. Then I feel worse about myself, go binge, and the vicious cycle continues. That’s why starting with basic steps matters. And when it comes to working out, pick something you enjoy. Even if it isn’t the “perfect” workout, if you’ll do it consistently, for you it might be the greatest workout ever.
