Finally We Have the AI Geo Guesser We Deserve

OpenAI just launched two new models of ChatGPT, o3 and o4-mini. I played with giving o3 images and asking it “where exactly was this image taken”. Within a minute or so it would have an answer and while I’m sure I’ll find some misses, it hasn’t missed for me yet.

One of my tests was giving it a picture of my view going up an escalator:

That shot was taken on the long escalator inside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.—specifically the bank that carries visitors from the concourse (Heritage Hall, Level 1) up toward the main gallery levels. The patterned bronze‑colored lattice you see through the glass curtain wall is the museum’s iconic exterior “corona.” Drop a pin and you’re at roughly 38.8913 °N, 77.0326 °W (1400 Constitution Ave NW).

It’s “thinking” included writing some quick Python code to use the PIL library to zoom in on portions of the image.

If you haven’t tried it yet, check it out!
